Tropical Johnson (TJ), based out of Richmond started in the late 80’s and performed at venues, festivals, colleges, and private events for many years. The band did radio station promotions and performed live on the radio multiple times. Winning the “Song for Richmond” contest gave the band positive exposure in the early 90’s and the popularity continued until the band made the decision to take a break in 1999.
The members took some time off to raise their families. With 11 children now grown up, a personal invite was made to open for a national touring act. Tropical Johnson decided to put the original line-up back together.
Early reactions to TJ’s return have been overwhelmingly positive. Old fans have returned and brought new fans to experience the fun, the singing, the dancing.
The band plays “decades of fun rock”, with a strong selection of songs from the 90’s. All the band members worked professional jobs after finishing college. High school and college is where the bands’ friendships and love to play music began. With these bonds combined with talented and experienced musicians (and with some careers winding down), Tropical Johnson will be able to focus on putting on the best show possible. The band looks to do limited openers, solo shows and festivals so book them early!
